Summary:
Turn off URL(slug) when no detail template selected
Detailed Description:
Without selecting a default detail template the URL(slug) can cause unintended
consequences.  We are using categories to display different types of news on
different pages and therefore don't want to set a single detail page as default.
However if the content editor(not admin/developer) enters a URL into the field
available then the page doesn't display properly.  It would be great to have a
setting for admins to hide this field.

You should be able to remove the url slug field by copying
modules/News/templates/editarticle.tpl to 
assets/module_custom/News/templates/editarticle.tpl and customizing the display
there.
