while it is in many cases a good idea to include full paths (including domain)
in {$image->file}, this new behaviour probably breaks some older gallery
templates, or can even make it difficult to rebuilt their old behaviour.
In trivial cases, where the old template looked somehting kile <a
src="{root_url}/{$image->file}"/> the fix is trivial, you just remove the
{root_url}/ part. In other cases, e.g. you refer to a CDN, or other dedicated
image server, it takes a little more work to work around this new behaviour.

perhaps an option regarding the URL build rules, might be an "option". Something
like include "root_url" no, include "root_url" yes, use "given url" as root_url
would be ideal.
