Detailed Description:
After changes to the page hierarchy the sitemap.xml is correctly generated to
disk, but not pushed to the Google Webmaster tools. Site verification code is
correctly added (something like 'UA-35439406-1')

It's a bit confusing BUT, the sitemap URL is output in the site map and pinged
to google.  google does not acknowledge the pings in Webmasters.  See
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=183669 for more
info.

Ah, OK, that IS confusing. 
Especially, as not only the date is wrong, but as the number of nodes is wrong
as well.
A strange behavior from Google.
