Detailed Description:
Configurtaion:

On a clean install, using all default templates
{SelfRegistration group=test}

To recreate issue:
Automatically create users in the FEU module: Yes
Enable Whitelist: Only allow matched username/emails to register
List of whitelist username/emails. One per line: Using syntax of
*@domain.com

Attempt registration from an email address that is not in the approved domains
whitelist

However when users submit a registration through the selfregistration module,
the result  and admin log show a successful registraion.

Admin Log Example:
355 prefix@domain.com logged in
       prefix@domain.com validated their account
       User prefix@domain.com assigned to FEU
14   User prefix@domain.com registered

No corresponding php errors were obvious
